Excuses – Not Just for Runners Any More (OK, they never have been)

This is always an interesting time of year to me. I personally don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. To me, why not just have a “today resolution”? Stop putting it off to some magical time: the New Year, the beginning of the month, the start of a week, or waiting for the weekend. It’s all just a way of making an excuse for not doing something you supposedly want to do. By the way, if you really want to…. you would… and if you really don’t want to… stop torturing yourself and everyone else who listens to you and just stop.

I found out a copy of my “Coach, I didn’t run today because…” is now a popular item at the Circus Library here in the Valley of the Sun. It seems that they came across a copy of the book, and at their get-togethers they pass it around and take turns reading excuses aloud. Somewhere along the way they realized the excuses weren’t just about running. So, now it has become a “running” joke (pun intended) not to make excuses for practicing their art.

I guess this underscores that this book is not just for runners. Get one for your favorite “excuse maker” and start turning them into an excuse buster. Get those New Year’s resolution makers to be TODAY resolution makers.

This is an excerpt from “Coach, I didn’t run because…” a book about excuses not to get your workout done and how to overcome them.

…Single parenting with two busy kids, working full-time as a software engineer and attempting to be a runner is a tough balance. Then, one day it became an even bigger challenge for me.

It was only a few years ago. But I remember it like it was yesterday. It happened. Something I would never expect – a nighttime home invasion. Though my kids were spared the trauma, I was not. I survived and worked through many emotional issues on my way back to both emotional and physical health. At first it was difficult just getting back to some semblance of normalcy.

Running has been a part of my life for more than 15 years. Running outside however for a very long time was emotionally difficult for me. I needed to find my way past the excuse. I loved running outdoors. I loved the freedom. I no longer felt that freedom. Fear replaced that. But, to run; just to run, was far more important. I longed to feel my energy streaming through me stride after stride. It was time to get running again. My compromise was to run on my treadmill either in the early mornings or after my long days of work. Indoor running is safer, convenient and I can keep an eye on the kiddos without arranging a babysitter. It worked.

…By the way, did you know at that speed on a treadmill it only takes a split second to lose it?

…. the whole world went into slow motion. I miss-stepped and I was now in mid-air; arms spread out grasping thin air; legs out behind me; and the whirring treadmill staring in my face. I don’t remember the impact. I know I landed face first. The broken nose and treadmill-sanded abrasions on my face were proof of that. It wasn’t pretty…
